Painting with process photos

I tried another Reddit portrait, this time on a
watercolor canvas

I don't know how I feel about these canvases. When I put a wash down the first time, it beads up like crazy. Then after a while, the canvas seems to suck up so much of the ink/paint that it's extremely difficult to get saturated colors. The final photo of the portrait was taken while the paint was still wet. When his hair is dry, I'm pretty sure the black parts will be a uniform gray, like the hair around it.
